LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Hundreds of families, community members and students and staff from Las Vegas’ Mater Academy East pay tribute to a 12-year-old who died in an e-scooter crash.

7th grader Jovonn Magee-Thomas, nicknamed “JoJo,” passed away Sunday morning after his e-scooter collided with an RTC Paratransit Van near Sandhill Road and Bonanza. LVMPD said Magee-Thomas was the 119th fatality on Las Vegas Valley roads, this year.

At a Wednesday night vigil, people packed the stands at the stadium to support Magee-Thomas’ family and pay tribute to the student’s memory.

Magee-Thomas was described by classmates and teachers as funny, kind, and a star athlete; his flag football jersey #8 will be retired in his memory.

Hundreds of people wore shirts displaying a logo: “Show Love Like Jojo.” Proceeds from the shirt will benefit the family, speakers said.

The 12-year-old’s parents thanked the crowd for support.

“Thankful for all of you that are out here supporting my son, supporting us. It’s real hard for us right now,” his father said.

“If it wasn’t for a lot of you guys, just everything that you guys have done for us, my family, I don’t think that I would be standing here today,” the child’s mother said.

The 7th grader’s flag football teammates shared fond memories of their friend.

“He was the funniest, and he was very very nice to everyone,” one friend said.

“I try to not cry during situations, but this really hurts. I’m going to miss Jojo for sure,” another teammate said.

A bench was dedicated in honor of Magee-Thomas and bears an engraving: “Jojo’s Bench.”
