LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Opportunity 180, a nonprofit in Las Vegas dedicated to improving and creating high-quality schools, has received the largest grant of its kind in state history from the U.S. Department of Education, officials said.
The organization was awarded $51 million as part of a federal program specifically designed to fund, create, and expand charter schools across the nation, according to an official release.
Officials said the funding will be distributed through sub-grants, which will then be allocated to support improvements at existing schools or facilitate the launch of new educational institutions.
Tamara Shear, CEO of Opportunity 180, explained the criteria for the grants.
“If you want to receive the grant, you have to be a three-star school or above if you want to expand. And then new schools, we also raise philanthropy to double the investment in making sure that new schools that launch receive a significant amount of investments to start strong. And then when they don’t, we monitor that and we figure out how we support those students and families to find the right options for them.”
Opportunity 180 anticipates that these grants will benefit between 20 and 27 new or existing schools. Each qualifying school has the potential to receive up to $2 million, with the exact amount contingent on the number of students it serves.
