LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Federal officials have called for 4% cuts in air traffic in Las Vegas and other busy airports, ramping up to 10% over the next week.
In a release from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), officials detailed the temporary 10% reduction in flights at 40 high-traffic airports, including Las Vegas’s airport.
According to the agency, a 4% reduction in operations is in effect starting Friday. That reduction will ramp up to 6% on Tuesday, 8% by Thursday, and finally 10% by Friday, Nov. 14.
An FAA review of aviation safety data led to the reduction, which officials said indicated increased stress on the system. That stress increased risk, officials said.
FAA officials stated that airlines will be required to issue full refunds but will not be obligated to cover secondary costs. International flights will not require a reduction in traffic.
FOX5 spoke to officials from airlines serving the Las Vegas valley. Officials from United Airlines said they had already made 4% traffic cuts through Sunday.
American Airlines officials said around 220 flights were cancelled on Friday, and that the airline is running a nearly full schedule. Around 12,000 of the 650,000 customers flying American on Friday had canceled flights, officials said, adding that the majority of them had been rebooked and reaccommodated within a few hours.
