LAS VEGAS (FOX5) —On Thursday, FOX5 received documents showing NV Energy had raised its estimate for how much it had overcharged customers to more than $65 million. That’s up substantially from the $17 million estimate released in May.
Then, we heard from viewers wondering how they would know if they had been overcharged, so today FOX5 is Getting Answers.
The utility says affected customers should have already received, or will receive, a letter or notification informing them of the billing error and the steps being taken.
How refunds will work
For customers with active accounts, the refund amount will appear as a credit on their monthly bill. Their subsequent bills will be lower until the full credit amount is applied.

Customers who no longer have an active account with NV Energy will be sent a refund check by mail to their last known address.

NV Energy said the refunds and credits are part of an ongoing investigation and a proposed settlement with the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada, so the process is designed to be automatic for customers.

The ongoing investigation will determine how much of a refund or credit each individual customer is entitled to, but it remains unclear how long the PUCN’s probe will take.
The commission is investigating overpayments in both southern and northern Nevada. NV Energy blames misclassification of properties for billing errors that started in 2002.
