Great Basin National Park announce temporary closure of cave system

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Lehman Caves, a beloved spot for tourists visiting Great Basin National Park, will be temporarily closed for the winter season, the National Park Service has announced.

According to a release, the caves will be undergoing work to replace the aging lighting system inside with modernized equipment and infrastructures. The original lighting system was installed in 1941 and replaced with the current system in 1977.

The work will involve the removal of 5 miles of wire and the installation of new lights and new emergency phones.

Demolition of the current system began in November, and construction is expected later this winter. The Lehman Caves Visitor Center will be closed for the duration of the project, but the Great Basin Visitor Center in Baker will remain open.

Cave tours are expected to resume in Spring 2026 when the project is completed.

The rest of the park will remain open for hiking and winter recreation. To learn more, visit the Great Basin National Park website.
