LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Las Vegas Raiders have reportedly begun reaching out to coordinators from playoff teams as their search for a new head coach intensifies, sources said.
NFL rules leave only small windows for interviewing coaches whose teams are still playing, a precaution intended to let those coaches focus on playoff games. Teams that are finished for the season or have a bye are available for interviews if the club grants permission.
National reports say the Raiders have made early requests to speak with several coordinators from teams that earned a bye this weekend, including Denver Broncos defensive coordinator and former head coach Vance Joseph; Broncos quarterbacks coach Davis Webb; and Clint Kubiak, the Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator and a former Saints assistant who is considered one of the up-and-coming offensive minds in the game.
The coaching landscape shifted again Tuesday when the Baltimore Ravens fired John Harbaugh after 18 years, adding an unexpected candidate pool.
General Manager John Spytek said he will give the new head coach the authority to assemble his own staff.
“I want to turn that over to the coach,” Spytek said. “We’re going to have a lot of great conversations about who, why, where. There’s going to be a lot of great football conversations. But my belief has always been you give a lot of the responsibility to the head coach to hire the staff that he wants to hire. It’s who reports to him and who he works with every day.”
Building a winner, Spytek added, is not just about physical talent but also about mindset.
“It’s about team before self. It’s about discipline. It’s about accountability. It’s about work ethic,” he said. “Winning is fun, but it comes at a price, and it is required every day, otherwise this league is far too competitive.”
As the Raiders, Spytek and Tom Brady piece together the roster and coaching search, the club’s immediate focus is on coaches whose interview windows are open now, with plans to pursue others next week.
