LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Nevada SPCA is highlighting a new program providing veterinary care to pet owners facing financial hardship and housing instability.

The Community Support Program provides these resources to prevent animals from being surrendered to shelters.

The grant- and donation-funded initiative removes barriers to care by providing access to critical veterinary services for individuals and families facing economic challenges, including those living in transitional housing.

The program operates as a no-barrier resource, ensuring that financial limitations do not prevent lifesaving veterinary care. The program focuses on early intervention to keep pets healthy and at home.

Elektra, a dog whose early life was marked by trauma, represents one success story from the program. Elektra’s first owners were abusive, and her brother passed away as a puppy. Her current owner rescued her from those conditions despite being homeless and living on the streets at the time.

Throughout that period, Elektra was his constant companion and protector, guarding him as he slept so his belongings would not be stolen.

When Elektra’s owner eventually secured transitional housing, Elektra became seriously ill, vomiting repeatedly. Her owner feared she had ingested something toxic but lacked the financial means to seek veterinary care.

He turned to Nevada SPCA’s Community Support Program, which covered Elektra’s medical treatment, allowing her to recover and continue living alongside the person who saved her.

“Stories like Elektra’s demonstrate why accessible veterinary care is so critical,” said Nevada SPCA Executive Director Lori Heeren. “No one should have to choose between their pet’s health and their own stability. Our Community Support Program exists to ensure that pets remain with their families, even during life’s most challenging moments.”
