LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Scammers are targeting Verizon customers with fake text messages promising refunds from last month’s network outage.
The fraudulent texts appear to come from Verizon and claim customers are entitled to a refund as a result of the outage. The messages warn of a limited redemption window and include a link with an urgent appeal to act immediately.
The texts are part of a smishing scam where bad actors are using reports of the recent mobile outage to trick customers. The link takes victims to a fake website that asks for financial information, allowing scammers to steal both personal information and money.
How to protect yourself
Customers should never click links in unexpected texts, even if they appear to come from an official source. Any promised credits, rebates or refunds should be confirmed through Verizon’s official app or website.
People should be suspicious of any site that asks for credit card or bank account numbers to issue a credit or refund.
