LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A big project on the west side of Las Vegas is celebrating a big milestone.

The Summerlin Parkway-215 project turns a year old. Drivers in the area might be used to navigating the construction zone by now, but changes are still to come.

“It is the first anniversary of the big three-year project for the Summerlin Parkway-215 project,” said FOX5’s Ken Smith. “Although we’re only one third through this project, there’s still a long way to go.”

No more major closures expected

“We’re not gonna have any more closures. This is pretty much in place and will stay in place with some minor adjustments,” said Robert Krause, construction inspector with Clark County Public Works.

That’s the good news. No more overnight major freeway closures expected for the next two years.

Some of the interchange improvements include adding a new flyover ramp from the southbound 215 to the eastbound Summerlin Parkway, along with a new eastbound Summerlin Parkway on ramp to southbound 215.

For cyclists and pedestrians, there are three new pedestrian bridges that will help connect and extend two regional bike trails.

“The pedestrian bridges are being set in the near future; we’ll have the ones west of the 215 being set,” Krause said. “Those are pretty big accomplishments and being able to get ready to tie into the City of Las Vegas’s trail system.”

Safety concerns in construction zone

Crews working on the project have noticed an increase in crashes within the construction zone along the 215 Freeway between Lake Mead Blvd and Far Hills Avenue, mainly due to drivers not slowing down to the 55 mph cone zone speed limit.

“Keep in mind not only we’re trying to keep them safe, but we’re trying to keep our construction crew out here safe,” Krause said.

Although we’re celebrating the first anniversary of when this project kicked off, unfortunately, there are two more years to go. The project is slated for completion by March 2028.
