LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Search and Rescue airlifted an injured climber who fell about 50 feet over the weekend.
According to LVMPD, on Saturday, Feb 28, around 12 p.m., a climber on the “Dream Safari” route on Dark Shadows Wall in Pine Creek fell between 40 to 50 feet.
A guide and another climber nearby located the injured climber. They controlled the bleeding from their injuries and waited for Search and Rescue to arrive, officials reported.
LVMPD says the victim was on the first pitch of the route, which was an extension of another climbing route. AIR3 transported 4 SAR officers to access the climber, treat their injuries, and load them into a titanium litter.
First responders created a lowering system to extract the victim and other climbers. The victim was airlifted to the BLM helipad and then taken to a local hospital by ambulance, officials said.
According to LVMPD, the rescue mission took about 7 hours. Officials shared a photo of the victim’s helmet, which was in pieces, but they say it’s what saved the climber’s life.
