LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A developer has broken ground on a new entertainment and community space in Las Vegas’ historic Westside, with a focus on local vendors and small business growth.
The project, called The Good Word Social Club, is under construction at the corner of D Street and Madison. Sam Cherry, CEO of Cherry Development, describes it as a two-story, 9,000-square-foot space featuring dining, live entertainment, a stage, and areas designed for local entrepreneurs.
“These are incubator spaces where you can come with your concept, you can learn your trade in a smaller space,” Cherry said. “And then the goal is, after a couple of years, to go out into the community and have a brick-and-mortar bigger space for the small business operator.”
Community-led development
Cherry says The Good Word will be community-led, operating through the City of Las Vegas Economic and Urban Development Department and Neighborhood Services.
Outreach is already underway to find community members, particularly small business owners who want to participate.
On the importance of focusing on small businesses in the area, Cherry said the Westside “has been overlooked for so long that it’s now the moment where it needs to step out of the shadows and kind of cast its own shadow.”
Part of a broader revitalization
Cherry says the project is intended to add momentum to revitalization efforts already visible in parts of the historic Westside — and to help rebuild the area as a destination.
“We see the beginning of the rebirth of a neighborhood,” Cherry said. “If you’re a tourist, you can come into town, you can spend three or four hours in an area, go back to the Strip, go back to Fremont. You can do the same thing in the Arts District. We see this as the beginning of that.”
Additional development is planned for the same block. Residential apartments — 104 units of workforce housing — are already under construction across from The Good Word by the same developer. A new College of Southern Nevada campus is also planned nearby.
The entire project carries a price tag of approximately $40 million. The apartments are expected to be available by the end of May. The Good Word is scheduled to be complete by the end of the year.
