LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Nearly five years after suffering a stroke, Bob Brown reunited with the firefighter-paramedic who responded to his home that day — this time to install security cameras.
Brown said he remembers little about the morning he collapsed.
“We were in bed, and I got up to use the restroom, and the next thing I knew, I was out,” Brown said.
The firefighter who responded was Cesar Guzman, a Bullhead City firefighter-paramedic. Brown said he did not expect to see Guzman again.
“Cesar was the gentleman who was here, and they literally saved my life,” Brown said.
Helpful Heroes connects off-duty firefighters with residents in need
The reunion was made possible through Helpful Heroes, a nationwide organization with a Bullhead City chapter organized by Scott Neal. The group connects off-duty firefighters with community members who need home maintenance and other services.
“When you let someone in your home, that is a big deal,” Neal said.
“The firefighters do that every single day. They meet people that they’ve never seen before, and they’re welcomed with open arms into their home. This is the very same concept.”
Neal said the return of Guzman to Brown’s home carried added meaning.
“It is just a warm, satisfying feeling to know that the person who saved Bob’s life is here to also help him produce a home that is safe,” Neal said.
Brown says the program fills a need for seniors
Brown said the service is especially important for older residents in the area.
“So many senior citizens live over here now that need these jobs and need somebody that won’t take advantage of them,” Brown said.
Guzman has since taken on additional work at Brown’s home and has assisted him during medical emergencies.
“He’s done other jobs for us here, which is a godsend,” Brown said. “He’s taken me to the hospital three times for different emergencies. Caesar is welcome in our home anytime.”
Neal said he has sent members of his Bullhead City team to Las Vegas to take on jobs and is hopeful additional franchises can be opened in the coming years to expand Helpful Heroes to other communities.
