LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Bureau of Land Management’s Pahrump Field Office will begin gathering wild horses and burros in the Spring Mountains Complex this weekend, just west of Las Vegas.
The BLM estimates there are 749 wild horses and more than 1,000 burros in the area, not counting this year’s foals. The agency plans to gather and remove approximately 425 horses and burros.
According to the BLM, the gathering is critical to the health of the land and the wild animals in the area. By balancing herd size with what the land can support, the BLM aims to protect habitat for other wildlife species, including mule deer, sage grouse, blue grouse, eagles, and hawks.
