LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Celebrate Earth Day with two community events at Downtown Summerlin: Tour de Summerlin on Saturday, April 18, and the Giant Student Farmers Market on Wednesday, April 22.

Southern Nevada’s longest-running cycling event is presented by Howard Hughes Communities, developer of Summerlin and Downtown Summerlin, and is expected to draw more than 750 cyclists.

Now in its 25th year, Tour de Summerlin offers three route options to fit a range of abilities: 80 miles, 40 miles, and 20 miles. The event is non-competitive and untimed, emphasizing safe cycling, camaraderie, and outdoor activity while showcasing the Summerlin community and surrounding scenery, including Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

Start times are:

  • 80-mile route: 7 a.m.
  • 40-mile route: 8:15 a.m.
  • 20-mile route: 9:15 a.m.

All bike types, including e-bikes, are permitted. Registered riders receive a 25th anniversary commemorative t-shirt and medal.

Registration fees are $130.06 for all routes, and $22.51 for the 20-mile course for participants ages 15 and under. An adult must accompany riders 15 and under on the 20-mile course.

More information and registration are available on the Tour de Summerlin website.

Less than a week later, on Earth Day, Downtown Summerlin will host the semiannual Giant Student Farmers Market, organized by Green Our Planet. This local nonprofit helps schools across the Las Vegas Valley plant and operate teaching gardens.

Considered the country’s largest student market, the free event runs 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on The Lawn and features produce from 60 school gardens across Southern Nevada.

More than 600 student “farmpreneurs” will sell herbs, vegetables, fruits, and crafts grown and created through their school garden programs. Proceeds go directly back to participating school gardens. Organizers say students gain hands-on experience in financial literacy by developing business plans and practicing customer service and negotiation skills—supported by local Southern Nevada bankers who coach them during the market.
