HENDERSON (FOX5) — The Henderson Police Department has released a new incident report detailing what investigators found at the suspected origin point of the Whitney Mesa fire in January, which killed one person and forced dozens of homes to evacuate.
According to the report provided to FOX5 on Monday, investigators found a pile of charcoal and several cans of food in the area where the fire started. A small propane cylinder, several aerosol cans and part of a lighter were also recovered.
While Henderson Police listed the fire’s specific cause as undetermined, the report notes the evidence could support the fire starting as an outdoor cooking incident that got out of control and spread through the area.
Police believe the victim, later identified as 19-year-old Kevin Reed, may have been overcome by smoke and flames, leaving him unable to escape.
