LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A 13-year-old DJ is preparing to perform throughout EDC weekend, showcasing a music career that started when he was 6 years old.

Jeremiah Klein, who performs as DJ DRGN, began his musical journey with drums at age 3 and piano around age 4 or 5.

“I started playing drums around when I was three years old and then piano around like 4 or 5-ish,” Klein said.

His classical training laid the groundwork for his current passion.

“I think the most helpful are piano and drums because drums is good for like drum beats and just keeping rhythm for DJing,” Klein said.

Early start behind the turntables

Klein’s father bought him a Serato DJ controller for his sixth birthday, launching his DJ career.

“When I was six years old, my dad bought me a Serato DJ controller for my birthday and that kind of got everything started up,” Klein said.

He has performed at venues across Las Vegas.

“I just like being able to shift energy in rooms. That’s actually the cool thing about it,” Klein said.

Klein said his age sometimes creates challenges in connecting with other DJs.

“Sometimes it’s hard because there’s not many other people that I can really like connect with on the fact that like in the way of that we both DJ at a young age,” Klein said.

Collaborations and original music

Klein has collaborated with local Las Vegas artists and is working on original music.

“My song, What You Started with Desi Marie, She’s a local artist out here. That song’s been doing pretty well,” Klein said.

He said the local music scene has made collaborations easier.

“It’s definitely easy because since it’s more of like a local, it’s more like everyone knows everyone out here,” Klein said.

Klein said homeschooling has given him more time to focus on music production.

“It’s pretty fun. I think like the main reason why it’s been going so well is because I’ve been homeschooled ever since we lived out here. So I’ve had so much more time to work on music. Like I basically, during the first semester of my homeschooling this year, I just made an entire full thing of tracks like for an EP,” Klein said.

EDC weekend performances

Klein has three shows scheduled during EDC weekend, including performances at Neon Owl on Thursday and Area 15 on Sunday. He is not performing at EDC itself.

“You can do anything if you put your mind to it,” Klein said.

He is working on an EP featuring multiple tracks with Las Vegas artists.

Klein is scheduled to attend the Tomorrowland Academy in Belgium this summer to continue developing his skills and connect with other young artists.
