LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Zion National Park has implemented Stage 2 fire restrictions effective May 22 due to increasing fire danger and dry conditions across southwest Utah, officials said.
The restrictions apply to all lands within Zion and will remain in effect until the superintendent rescinds them, the National Park Service said.
Under Stage 2, open fires of any kind are prohibited throughout the park. Campfires and charcoal fires are not allowed in Watchman Campground, South Campground or picnic areas in Zion Canyon.

Smoking is also restricted in vegetated areas. Visitors may smoke only inside an enclosed vehicle, at a developed recreation site, or in an area cleared of vegetation at least 3 feet in diameter, officials said.
Fireworks and other pyrotechnic devices are prohibited. Fireworks are always banned on federal public lands, including Zion National Park, according to the park.
Cook stoves fueled by petroleum or liquid propane gas are allowed. Fires in established fire rings will still be permitted at Lava Point Campground, the park said.
“Dry conditions are increasing across the region, and these restrictions are intended to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires in Zion,” Superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh said in a statement. “Visitors can help protect the park, nearby communities, and firefighters by following all fire restrictions during their visit.”
Park officials said the restrictions are part of broader fire prevention efforts across southwest Utah and northern Arizona, and they urge visitors to check rules before traveling because restrictions can vary by agency and jurisdiction.
Violations can be punished by a fine of up to $5,000 and/or up to six months in jail, officials said.
