LAS VEGAS — Hundreds of restaurants across the valley are ready to kick off Las Vegas Restaurant Week, an annual event that raises money to fight food insecurity in the community.

FOX5 visited several restaurants inside Westgate that are once again taking part in the two-week-long event.

Dante Garcia is preparing the restaurant week menu at Edge Steakhouse, featuring baby shiitake mushrooms and oyster mushrooms.

“It’s always a great feeling to be able to give back not only to your community, but also to those in need,” Garcia said. “On my end, as a chef, my job is to feed people. So I always want to feed people regardless of the situation, if I can.”

Shawn Gabilondo at Fresco is also participating. He has lived in Las Vegas for 25 years and has two daughters, ages 9 and 11.

“It’s a wonderful community. There’s a lot of opportunity. There’s a lot of really entertaining, a lot of great things to see and do out here,” Gabilondo said. “Vegas has been very hospitable to families and kids.”

Gabilondo said he is happy to help those in need.

“There are a lot of people that struggle, and we’re happy to provide a little bit extra for people and to help them out and to do what we can to also provide for the community around Vegas,” he said. “We’re one big family.”

Since 2007, Las Vegas Restaurant Week has helped provide more than 10 million meals for those facing hunger in Southern Nevada.

Last year, Restaurant Week raised more than $400,000, helping Three Square provide 1.2 million meals. Three Square hopes to break that record with the more than 300 restaurants participating this year.

A portion of diners’ checks goes to Three Square. Participating restaurants include Benihana and Sid’s.

“You don’t want to have to not be able to have a meal or you don’t know where it’s coming from. That’s tough,” said Tisha Toombs of Sid’s.

Toombs said giving back brings her satisfaction.

“Food makes people so happy. When you can give, when you can make somebody happy, then I feel like I’ve accomplished what I wanted to,” she said.

Las Vegas Restaurant Week runs Monday, June 1 through Friday, June 12.
