LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — As data centers spring up across the country to meet soaring demand for artificial intelligence, Henderson officials are considering a temporary pause on new projects.
During a city council meeting Tuesday, members introduced a bill that would place a moratorium on permit applications for data centers in the city. The proposal is intended to give leaders time to study the potential impacts of the large-scale facilities, which can bring jobs and tax revenue but also raise concerns about heat generation, water, and energy use.
The move comes as Southern Nevada continues to grapple with where and how data centers should be built.
In Boulder City, residents spent months pushing back against a proposed data center. People living near the planned site organized protests, packed public meetings and posted signs around town urging officials to reject the project. The Boulder City Commission ultimately denied that proposal.
Henderson’s bill, if approved, would not permanently block data centers but would temporarily halt new permit applications while the city reviews the impact the facility could have.
The council is expected to consider the measure at a future meeting.
