LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Tourism officials told the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority board Tuesday that professional sports and marquee events have become a core part of the city’s economic strategy, not just its entertainment lineup.

‘No ticket, no problem’

During the board meeting, LVCVA officials outlined how Las Vegas positioned itself as a destination during the FIFA World Cup, despite not serving as a host city.

“While we are not a host city, we’ve worked hard to position Las Vegas as the world’s watch party. Our message was simple: no ticket, no problem. Fans who could not attend matches in person could still be part of the global excitement through our watch parties, sports books, restaurants, bars, and resort activations across the destination,” said Kate Wik, chief marketing officer for the LVCVA.

NBA Summer League as a model

Officials said the same approach is being applied to the NBA Summer League, where 33 teams play 76 games at UNLV. The strategy extends beyond the arena.

“The takeaway is we didn’t just show up for the games. We promoted, we produced, we amplified the experience around them on and off the court,” Wik said.

Tourism as the engine

An industry analyst presenting to the board said tourism remains the dominant force in Nevada’s economy.

“This industry generates more jobs, more wages and salaries, more economic impact output than any other industry in the state of Nevada by a very wide margin. It generates a remarkable amount of social impact. It continues to be the heart of our economy,” said Jeremy Aguero, an industry analyst.

Visitors — including sports fans — pumped nearly $51 billion into the Las Vegas Valley’s economy last year and supported one out of every three jobs, according to figures presented at the meeting.

“Direct employment — those getting a paycheck directly from our tourism industry — is one out of every five jobs in our community. If we add the supplier and induced impacts, it’s roughly one out of every three jobs we have today,” Aguero said.

Owning the moment without hosting the game

Officials said Las Vegas does not need to be an official host city to benefit financially from major sporting events.

“The takeaway is bigger than soccer. Las Vegas does not have to host the game to own the moment,” Wik said.

Economists told the board that Las Vegas is more dependent on tourism than any other U.S. city of its size is on any single industry.
