LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Target and the Boys and Girls Club of Southern Nevada hosted a private back-to-school shopping event Monday at the Target store on South Maryland Parkway.
75 Las Vegas students received a $100 gift card each and a backpack stocked with school supplies.
The event closed its doors to regular shoppers and reserved dedicated checkout lanes for participating students and their families. Each student received a Champion backpack pre-loaded with Yoobi notebooks, gel pens, a reusable water bottle and snacks before shopping at the store.

Students selected based on need
Boys and Girls Club of Southern Nevada Chief Development Officer Yolanda Mationg said clubhouse directors worked directly with families to identify students most in need of supplies. The 75 participants were drawn from multiple clubhouses across Southern Nevada, ranging in age from approximately 7 to 15.
“If they did not have this opportunity, they might not be able to go back to school with everything that’s needed to be successful,” Mationg said.
One student said the event meant her parents could put their money toward other necessities.
“I am so thankful that I got all these school supplies and my parents don’t have to spend money,” the student said. “They could keep it on medications… stuff that they need… like clothes.”
The Las Vegas event is one of 20 similar events Target is hosting across the country as part of its back-to-school initiative, supporting approximately 1,700 students in total. Local Target team members from across 20 stores volunteered to help students shop during the event.
