Sphere and Discovery Children’s Museum are hosting a free two-day family event

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Sphere Entertainment Co. and DISCOVERY Children’s Museum announced the second-annual “Sphere Weekend,” a two-day family event ahead of the first anniversary of The Wizard of Oz at Sphere.

The event takes place Saturday, Aug. 8 and Sunday, Aug. 9 at DISCOVERY Children’s Museum in downtown Las Vegas. Activities are inspired by the creativity, technology and innovation behind Sphere’s reimagining of The Wizard of Oz.

“Curiosity sparked by wonder can inspire future innovators,” said Rich Constable, Global Head of Government Affairs and Social Impact at Sphere. “Through The Wizard of Oz at Sphere and experiences like Sphere Weekend, we hope to inspire the next generation to explore careers in STEAM-related fields. As part of our ongoing commitment to the greater Las Vegas community, Sphere is proud to continue its five-year investment in DISCOVERY’s youth education programs, now entering its second year.”

What to expect

The event is open to guests of all ages and is included with general admission to the museum. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Scheduled activities include:

• Apple Drop Challenge — Engineer a protective device to safely drop an apple from the free-fall drop zone in the tinkering laboratory, inspired by the apple-throwing trees seen in The Wizard of Oz at Sphere.
• Tornado in Oz — Watch a live tornado generator demonstration inspired by the twister that takes Dorothy to the Land of Oz.
• Code the Yellow Brick Road — Use code to guide robots along the Yellow Brick Road toward the Emerald City.
• Artistic Animations — Design digital animations or draw on a 2D coloring page, inspired by Sphere’s XO Student Design Challenge.
• Create Your Own Orbi — Make a take-home version of Sphere’s emoji character.
• Drone Exploration — Pilot a drone through an obstacle course and learn how the technology is used at Sphere.
