LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officer was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon after responding to a call near Tropicana Avenue and Mountain Vista Street, according to Sheriff Kevin McMahill.
Officer Austin Abdelnabi, 30, joined Metro in 2023 and was among the first officers to respond to a report of a man acting erratically and waving a gun. McMahill said Abdelnabi was ambushed as he stepped out of his patrol vehicle near Mountain Vista and Hacienda.
Officers returned fire, performed CPR
Officers returned fire and killed the suspect. Several officers then rushed to Abdelnabi’s side. A Clark County Office of Public Safety sergeant also responded and helped perform CPR.
“I will tell you that I watched some unbelievable heroism by those officers, and there were a number of other people present on scene, including a Clark County Office of Public Safety Sergeant who joined in to perform CPR,” McMahill said. “I want to thank our brave brothers and sisters of the Clark County Fire Department, the other emergency responders, and the heroic doctors and nurses at UMC who worked tirelessly to save Austin’s life.”

Processions held across the valley
First responders gathered for a procession in Abdelnabi’s honor Tuesday night. A second procession was held Wednesday afternoon as his body was moved from the Clark County Coroner’s Office to a funeral home in downtown Las Vegas.
Marine Corps veteran from South Carolina
Before joining Metro, Abdelnabi served in the United States Marine Corps. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton and assigned to Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Division for his first deployment. He was decorated with multiple medals for his service.
Abdelnabi was originally from South Carolina. He is survived by his parents, siblings, and his wife, Sage.
“Austin was also known for talking about how much he loved his wife, Sage. Yesterday, I had to tell her that Austin was killed doing a job that he loved,” McMahill said.
What comes next
It remains unclear whether Abdelnabi fired his weapon at the suspect. The sheriff said funeral details will be announced in the coming days.
McMahill is expected to release additional details about the suspect on Friday.
It is standard department protocol to present body-worn camera footage during a news briefing 72 hours after an officer-involved shooting.
Vigil for officer
The Injured Police Officer Fund will be hosting a candlelight vigil for Abdelnabi on Friday, August 7 at Police Memorial Park, located near Grand Canyon Drive and Cheyenne Ave.
Community members are invited to come to the event, which begins at 7 p.m.
