LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley said the city is reviewing its procedures following the June 12 shooting death of city maintenance worker Joey McLean.
Former city maintenance worker Brysen Kim is charged in McLean’s death. Kim was indicted by a grand jury and has pleaded not guilty to murder charges.
Berkley said OSHA and Las Vegas Metro Police have not yet released their final findings on the shooting. She said the city followed its union contract steps on moving employees and is now examining whether anything could have been done differently.
“We are examining what happened and what we can do so that tragedy, that crisis could never happen again,” Berkley said. “The reality is two families have been horribly impacted and may never recover from this tragedy. What was the city’s responsibility and what could we have done differently?”

Months of HR complaints preceded the shooting
Documents released by police and the city — totaling more than 1,500 pages — showed a lengthy history of complaints and threats between the two workers.
McLean requested a work site transfer in February, though he did not mention Kim by name. In that request, McLean wrote: “If I could put this off until next shift bid I would — unfortunately this is urgent. I need the city to be flexible and help.” In a separate formal letter to HR, McLean wrote, “I am afraid for my life.”
Within days of McLean’s transfer request, Kim filed an HR complaint against McLean, alleging McLean “unlatched the bottom latch on the bed of the dump truck so when I went to go close it — the whole bed fell off and almost crushed my feet.”
Following the complaints, McLean was placed on paid leave. According to the documents, management said the two workers “needed to learn to work together and have an amicable relationship.”
An attorney for McLean’s family has reached out to say they plan to make an announcement next week.
