LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Clark County School District is responding to complaints from parents about school buses running late and leaving students behind at designated stops during the first days of the new school year.
In a statement to FOX5, CCSD said it transitioned to an upgraded routing and scheduling platform in June and acknowledged, “We have faced routing and scheduling challenges during the first two days of the school year.” Parents say those challenges have resulted in some students at Thurman White Academy arriving nearly an hour late.
‘Three hours a day’
Parent Nicolette Toshi said her children are spending significantly more time in transit than expected.
“Yeah, that’s a huge time constraint because they’re spending now; it’s turned into an hour and 20 minutes, but that’s each way. So that’s three hours a day,” Toshi said.
Toshi also said overcrowding is causing some students to be left behind at stops entirely.
“They go to step on the bus, and the bus driver looks at the bus and says, ‘Oh, the bus is full,’ and says, ‘Okay, I can’t let any more on.’ So there is no pre-planning involved. So the kids are left scrambling,” Toshi said.

Students missing class, parents seeking answers
At Southeast Career Technical Academy, one parent said her daughter missed nearly all of her first period on the first day of school and had an anxiety attack as a result of being stranded.
Another parent questioned the district’s readiness.
“I don’t understand why there wasn’t more preparation for this,” the parent said.
A separate parent emphasized the stakes for students without other transportation options.
“Some kids don’t have another way to school. The bus system is all they have. And leaving them without a bus is kind of crazy to me,” the parent said.
District reports improving on-time rates
CCSD reported that 88 percent of bus routes ran on time on Tuesday and 90 percent ran on time on Wednesday. The district said in a statement: “We are working diligently to improve our performance and ensure consistent, reliable service to 100% of our students. As the year progresses, we will also consolidate bus routes as much as possible, without impacting the service offered to students.”
CCSD said it is fully committed to resolving these issues and is actively engaging with families who reach out. The district is encouraging anyone with concerns to contact the transportation department.
Parents say the delays are linked to the district’s new start times this year and that working families need a resolution soon, as many rely on the buses to get to their shifts.
