LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Caution tape remained Wednesday around a Subway and Marco’s Pizza at 6105 W. Flamingo Rd. after the strip mall’s roof collapsed, prompting a rescue by Clark County Fire and an ongoing investigation by the Clark County Building Department.
Clark County Fire confirmed crews rescued three people from both buildings, cutting through a wall to free one person who was trapped inside Marco’s Pizza. Officials confirmed no one was seriously hurt.
Witnesses say roof had been sagging
Regular customer Nick Malis said he was inside one of the restaurants when the collapse occurred Wednesday morning.
“No more than 15 minutes later, I walked in, dropped my stuff off,” Malis said. “And there was a crash and it was so loud.”
Malis said the sound initially disoriented him.
“It sounded like a bomb, or something crashed, or somebody dropped a trash can,” he said.
Malis said the collapse did not come as a surprise. He and nearby tenants told reporters they had noticed the roof sagging for some time.
“Everybody knew that there was a problem. I mean, the thing was dramatically bowed,” Malis said.
He recalled pointing out the roof’s condition to a family member during a previous visit.
“I remember even bringing my mom over here, and we went and got some food one time. And she — the first thing she mentioned, she said, look at that roof,” Malis said.
Surveying the damage, Malis said the outcome could have been worse.
“I mean, you’d have tons of debris and wood, and everything fell. That would have crushed anybody, anything. So, I’m just glad. I don’t think anybody got seriously hurt,” he said.
Investigation ongoing
The Clark County Building Department is investigating the cause of the collapse. The building’s landlord, speaking off camera, said he is working with the Clark County Building Department. It is unclear what will happen to the building.
