LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A cockroach infestation took over Marisela Bautista’s home over the weekend, according to Bautista.

“They’re in the dishwasher on the stove. They’re coming through the shower. I see them in my dog’s water bowl. I see them in my bed. They’re everywhere,” Bautista said.

Health complications add to concerns

Bautista has dealt with health complications for a long time, including seizures and a brain aneurysm.

“I come home to rest because I suffer from chronic pain. But when I sleep, I have nightmares of cockroaches,” Bautista said.

County confirms link to construction

Bautista said she suspects the cockroaches are coming from construction happening near Wetlands Park, behind her house. Clark County confirmed the roaches are surfacing because construction is disturbing the dirt. Recent rain and heat are also contributing to the conditions, according to the county.

Bautista said neighbors have faced criticism over the infestation.

“A lot of neighbors are afraid to speak up, not because they’re ashamed, but because a lot of people are judging us based on cleanliness when it’s not that,” Bautista said.

Not German cockroaches, pest expert says

Neighbors were concerned the insects were German cockroaches, which are known for living indoors, spreading bacteria and reproducing in large numbers. Robert Patterson, owner of Let’s Go Pest Control, said that is not the case.

“Their abdomen for a German cockroach will extend right to the very end of their wings, but here it doesn’t,” Patterson said.

Patterson said his advice is simple.

“I always recommend receiving pest control according to your tolerance level. If you have 0 tolerance, you probably want to get it monthly. If you have a high tolerance, maybe a couple times a year,” Patterson said.

Patterson said the insects are field roaches. Clark County advises residents to contact a licensed pest control specialist and enlist the help of their HOA, if possible. Bautista and her neighbors are raising funds to help those who cannot afford pest control.
