LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A Clark County program is giving families extra help getting their children ready for the classroom.

The University of Nevada-Reno Extension office hosted its 11th annual “Kickoff to Kindergarten” event Saturday, offering free kindergarten-readiness supplies and hands-on activities for preschoolers.

Organizers said holding the event a couple weeks after school starts means parents aren’t competing with other back-to-school fairs and can spend more time practicing early learning skills.

Gwen Goetting, a community-based instructor, said the event provides resources some families might not otherwise be able to afford.

“We’re providing kindergarten readiness supplies and materials for our littlest learners getting ready for school,” Goetting said. “It provides a lot of materials families might not be able to afford, and activities that prepare kids so they’re ready when they walk in the door.”

The “Kickoff to Kindergarten” event is unique to Clark County. UNR Extension says families can find more free classes and workshops here.
