LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Henderson Animal Protection Services, with support from the Henderson City Attorney’s Office, has rescued 21 Sphynx cats following an investigation into animal welfare concerns involving Sin City Sphynx and breeder Shanti Cloonan.
Court awards custody to city
Following the investigation and a court hearing, the court determined that Cloonan was unfit to retain ownership of the animals and awarded custody of the 21 cats to the City of Henderson.
Many of the cats were found to be suffering from illnesses and physical abnormalities associated with breeding practices that raised animal welfare concerns. The cats will remain in APS care as they receive veterinary treatment and the support needed to address their health and welfare needs.
Adoption opportunities to come
Once the cats are healthy and ready for placement, the city will share information about available adoption or rescue opportunities.
The case highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership and breeding practices. The City of Henderson has ordinances in place to promote the safe and humane care of animals and protect their health and welfare. APS will continue to enforce these standards and investigate reports of animal welfare concerns.
City seeks information from public
The city is seeking information from individuals who purchased or obtained a cat from Sin City Sphynx or Shanti Cloonan and whose animal subsequently experienced significant health issues.
