LAS VEGAS (FOX5) —New video shows how close a car came to hitting a kindergartner, a sixth grader and their mother outside Pinecrest Academy St. Rose. The mother is crediting a crossing guard for stepping in front of the car just before it reached them.
Dashcam video captures the moment
Dashcam video provided by Jake Garcia captured the incident on Wednesday morning in a school zone crosswalk where people were crossing the street.
“And from a distance, we saw a car coming, but not knowing that he was speeding towards us,” said mother Kae’la Leon Guerrero.
As the car approached, All City Management Services crossing guard Richard Jones stepped into its path.
“He shielded us,” said Leon Guerrero.

Mother describes how close the car came
Kae’la Leon Guerrero was holding the hand of her 5-year-old daughter at the time. Her 11-year-old son was behind them. The car was less than ten feet from hitting them as they were in the crosswalk.
“If that cross guard didn’t jump in front of that car, something bad would have definitely happened,” Guerrero said.
Jones said he was doing his job.
“Honestly I just try to do the job the best way I can,” Jones said.
Jones told FOX5 he believes the car was going around 35 miles-per-hour in a 15 mile-per-hour school zone.
Guard, mother meet after video spreads
Jones and Leon Guerrero met on Thursday, and she showed him the video, which is circulating on social media. Word also spread inside Pinecrest Academy St. Rose about Jones’ actions.
Staff members at the school were heard thanking him.
“Hey Richard you’re a hero!” a group of people shouted from across the street while FOX5 was interviewing Jones.
Leon Guererro asked for a hug, which he accepted.
“I don’t know how many times I said thank you for what happened yesterday, but he’s an amazing man. And my kids thank him every day actually,” Guerrero said.
Dashcam owner also credits guard
Jake Garcia, who recorded the dashcam video, said he drives on the road every day to take his son to a different school. He said he also wanted to thank Jones for putting himself in front of the car to protect the children.
Guerrero said her kids were shaken up, and she is still trying to comfort them. The driver of the car left the scene after the incident.
Leon Guerrero said she hopes the incident raises awareness. She says drivers need to pay attention in school zones, put down the phone and obey speed limits.
