NYE COUNTY (FOX5) — Authorities in Nye County are stepping up patrols around school bus stops following an incident reported by a student, sheriff’s officials announced Thursday.

The Nye County Sheriff’s Office said deputies are actively investigating an incident that occurred near a bus stop serving Rosemary Clarke Middle School and Hafen Elementary School in Pahrump, roughly an hour west of Las Vegas.

According to the Nye County sheriff, the incident involved a student approached by a man in a van. The student ran off, and deputies are looking for the suspect.

Deputies are coordinating with Nye County School District as detectives look into the matter. As an added safety precaution, the sheriff’s office stated that a deputy will be stationed directly at the bus stop over the next several school days.

Authorities said deputies across the department will also maintain an increased presence and heightened vigilance throughout morning pick-up and afternoon drop-off times across the area.

“The safety and well-being of our students and community remain our top priorities,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement, adding that further information will be provided once it can be made public without compromising the inquiry.

Officials say this is an ongoing investigation.
