LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The latest proposal for live events at the Historic Commercial Center is sparking debate among small business owners and neighbors as county leaders seek to revive the old event center.
Tuesday, the Clark County Board of Commissioners approved $10 million for future investments into the Event Center in the southwest corner off Liberace Avenue. County officials said any proposed use or partnership still needs further approval from the Redevelopment Agency.
According to Commissioner Tick Segerblom, Insomniac, the entity behind the annual Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, plans to invest an additional $20 million to restore and revive the event center – also known to long-time locals as the “Ice Palace.”
“It’s going to enable Insomniac to complete their purchase and then invest $20 million to renovate it and rehab it, make it a current event center. It’s going to be very exciting,” he tells FOX5.
“They want to use the New Orleans Square, put little things in there, have museums. They’re very excited about this project. This is not just coming in and making an event center. They view Las Vegas as their home base, and so this is going to be their base, which is huge,” Segerblom tells FOX5, noting that the event space can be used for a variety of in-person community events.
Businesses like The Composers Room, one of the newer additions to Commercial Center that brings in live performers for multiple nights of the week and matinees, support more live entertainment.
“When we say we want to be that Vegas again, let’s bring the live entertainment that Vegas wants to have,” said Damian Costa, owner of the Composers Room. “To see them commit to this neighborhood, I think we should be honored,” he said.
A number of neighbors in nearby residential communities or high-rises voiced concerns over noise and traffic from crowds.
“There are hundreds of entertainment venues in Las Vegas. The last place you need a new one is in Winchester and the Commercial Center,” one resident said at the Commission meeting.
“We don’t want this across the street,” another neighbor said.
Others voiced concerns about congestion along the increasingly busy Maryland Parkway.
Segerblom said the event center had been zoned for live events since the 1960s, and any noise would have to comply with county regulations. Plans from Insomniac will be presented to County officials in the next two weeks, Segerblom said.
