NORTH LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — North Las Vegas kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month Saturday with a celebration bringing together cultures from across the valley.
Music has been part of his life for years
For Irvin Garcia, mariachi music has been part of his life since sixth grade.
“So, about eight years now. But, I enjoy it. I love it so much,” Garcia said.
Saturday, his trumpet joined the sounds filling Craig Ranch Regional Park as North Las Vegas kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month.
“It’s always a joy to see the Hispanic community out here at Craig Park especially, just being able to embrace their tradition,” Garcia said.

City’s 6th annual celebration
The city’s sixth annual celebration brought together food, music and traditions from across the Hispanic and Latino community.
“We’re so proud of our diversity. All the countries that are represented, all the cultures, all the heritage that’s here,” said Scott Black, mayor pro tem for the city of North Las Vegas.
More than 40% of North Las Vegas residents are Hispanic, according to the city. For some families, the night was about making sure the next generation knows this culture.
“They mean so much, they have small businesses, they teach in our schools, they bring their culture and their heritage here,” Black said.
Passing down the tradition
For Garcia, a music education major at UNLV, passing down the tradition is his dream career.
“Well, my goal is actually to become a Mariachi teacher here in Las Vegas, a part of the CCSD district,” Garcia said.
The city says this is the sixth year for the celebration, and organizers say it continues to grow and evolve each year.
