LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — As the Las Vegas Aces enter the postseason, their sights are set on familiar territory: capturing their fourth WNBA championship in five years.
Leading that charge is center A’ja Wilson, whose continued dominance has moved the conversation beyond chasing greatness to actively defining it.
Coming off another 1,000-point campaign and rewriting league record books along the way, Wilson’s individual accolades continue to mount. Yet those working alongside the superstar note that her drive remains rooted in relentless preparation and collective success rather than hardware.
‘Destiny written on her life’
Aces head coach Becky Hammon credited Wilson’s rare combination of natural talent, unmatched discipline, and competitive spirit.
“She definitely has a different mojo, different DNA,” Hammon said. “She’s just somebody who has destiny written on her life. And I think when you have that on your life, and then you have the work ethic that she does, and the care factor that she does, she’s winning wherever she goes.”
For Wilson, the accolades remain secondary to internal standards of excellence.
“Greatness can look different for everybody,” Wilson said. “I mean, I’m always going to believe in myself and have that confidence of being like, yeah, you know, I want to be just great at what I do. But when it comes to the accolades and the things that follow behind it, I don’t think I could ever dream of something like that — to do it not just one time, but multiple times.”
Teammates push to appreciate historic run
Point guard Chelsea Gray emphasized that fans and observers should not take Wilson’s peak years for granted.
“You need to appreciate greatness while it’s still playing,” Gray said. “Every time we think that, okay, this is her, she comes back and she gets better.”
Postseason focus turns to defense
With postseason play getting underway, personal milestones are taking a back seat to team objectives. Wilson noted that the Aces’ championship blueprint starts on the defensive side of the floor.
“We got to defend,” Wilson said. “We have to defend every single possession every time and be great in that.”
The Aces’ journey toward another championship banner begins at Michelob Ultra Arena with a first-round series against the Indiana Fever.
