LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Las Vegas Aces are heading into the postseason with their sights set on securing a fourth WNBA championship in five seasons, guided by centerpiece forward A’ja Wilson.
Wilson enters playoff action following another 1,000-point regular season, cementing her status among the sport’s all-time greats while adding to an already historic basketball resume.
“Greatness can look different for everybody, you know?” Wilson said. “I mean, I’m always going to believe in myself and have that confidence of being like, yeah, you know, I want to be just great at what I do. But when it comes to the accolades and the things that follow behind it, I don’t think I could ever dream of something like that, to do it not just one time, but multiple times.”
Defining a standard of sustained excellence
Wilson’s peers and teammates emphasize that her sustained dominance stems from an unrelenting commitment to improvement each season.
“She definitely has a different mojo, different DNA. She’s just somebody who has destiny written on her life,” an observer said. “And I think when you have that on your life, and then you have the work ethic that she does, and the care factor that she does, she’s winning wherever she goes.”
Those around the franchise note that Wilson continues to elevate her performance even after reaching the pinnacle of the sport.
“You need to appreciate greatness while it’s still playing,” a team member added. “Every time we think that, okay, this is her, she comes back and she gets better.”
Shifting focus from personal records to team hardware
Already boasting three WNBA championship rings and four MVP honors, Wilson is widely viewed as the frontrunner to secure a fifth league MVP trophy. However, the focus now pivots entirely to collective team defense and postseason execution.
“We got to defend,” Wilson said. “We have to defend every single possession every time and be great in that.”
The Aces open their title defense in the first round of the playoffs against the Indiana Fever at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas.
