LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — With rain in the forecast, FOX5 returned to a storm drain channel and tunnel area where damaged fencing was spotted last week.

The fencing around the channel and tunnel at Topaz and Tompkins has large holes on two sides. Homeless people live in the tunnels and are at risk of flooding when rain hits the area. FOX5 saw two people enter the flood channel Thursday evening.

Parents are also concerned about their kids around the holes. Rowe Lewis Elementary School is nearby, and FOX5 saw buses and kids around the flood channel after school.

Father describes easy access

One father, who has children attending school nearby, talked about the danger.

“Anything can happen with the hole. It’s just a minute for destruction,” said Younis Wiley.

County response

FOX5 saw a Clark County Public Works truck at the site. Public Works is responsible for repairing fences like the ones at the channel.

Clark County has been responsive to calls from FOX5 ever since we noticed the problem last week.

Late Thursday, the county told FOX5 that fence repairs have been added to the Public Works job queue. A date for repairs has not been set.

Officials said other fence repairs in the area were made Sept. 24, prior to when FOX5 saw damaged fences.
