LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Volunteers spent the day cleaning up trash in the Arts District, saying they want the neighborhood to look as good as the murals and galleries that draw people there.

SEIU’s Climate Justice Caucus teamed up with Arts District community leaders for a trash cleanup, even with gray skies and wind in the forecast. Crews fanned out through alleys and side streets off Main Street, picking up cups, cans and debris they say often blow out of dumpsters or get left behind by tourists.

Volunteers received a free coffee from Makers and Finders and a chance to win a bike, but organizers say the real goal is to show pride in the neighborhood.

“We take pride in our community. We want people to be able to come down here because especially with all the art we even have here in the art galleries, we want everyone to know that it’s a safe and welcoming environment for people to come check out the art,” said Tony Chavez, an Arts District community leader.

“We’re just really grateful to be out here today and to be doing the work. Rolling up our sleeves and actually doing the work is something that’s very important, especially for SEIU. I mean, we are the public sector, so you see us out in the streets consistently out here trying to make sure that everybody has a safe and secure place to live,” said Sara Evans, SEIU Climate Justice Caucus co-chair.

The group plans to make cleanups a monthly event, with a Thanksgiving trash pickup and food drive planned next near the Barter Mall off Wyoming Avenue. A date for that event has not yet been set. Chavez said the NAACP also partnered on Saturday’s cleanup.
