LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Overnight rain and winds shut down roads near the Las Vegas Strip Sunday, as the Valley felt the impacts of post-tropical cyclone Rachel.

FOX5 crews followed the flooding as roads behind the LINQ Hotel and storm channels near the Virgin Hotel were overcome with rushing water.

Crews shut down roads like Koval Lane and Winnick Ave because of flooding. In the aftermath, debris and trash could be found pushed up against the flood channel gates.

High winds also downed power lines near Lone Mountain and Camino Al Norte in North Las Vegas. NV Energy crews were seen working in the area.

Tourists near the Strip say they were surprised to encounter the harsh weather during their trips.

“It rained pretty heavy all night long, and I didn’t think much of it until I came outside and saw all this chaos,” Leronne Charles from Houston said.

Others recounted what the flooding looked like.

“They were taking cars away. I don’t know if they were stuck because of the flood, or if they were stuck because of accidents, but it was quite a bit going on this morning. The roads were shut down. There was no through-way traffic,” Canetha Buchanan said.

Near Koval and Winnick, FOX5 saw fences broken by the flash floods and debris in the storm channel.

Crews have since cleaned and reopened the roads, but some lingering dust remains from the mud.
