LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A World War II-era B-29 Superfortress that crashed into Lake Mead in 1948 is now open for divers to visit.
According to the National Park Service, in 1948, a crew of researchers was flying a B-29 Superfortress over what is now Lake Mead National Recreation Area. After completing high-altitude tests, the pilot brought the plane lower, believing it was about 400 feet above the water. The altimeter was off, and around 12:30 p.m., at about 230 mph, the aircraft struck the lake and sank.

All crew members escaped, got into life rafts and were rescued by the National Park Service.
Park officials say for decades the exact location of the wreck was unknown. In the early 2000s, map data revealed a plane-shaped mass underwater, identifying the site of the B-29.
The Lake Mead B-29 is now open to divers. Lower water levels mean it is no longer considered a technical dive for many. Park rangers emphasize that the site is protected, and that divers are asked to observe only and follow “Leave No Trace” principles underwater.
