A preliminary crash investigation by the Nevada Highway Patrol’s Major Incident Reconstruction Team found the Tahoe was traveling northbound on I-15 when it ran off the road, the report said. The impact ejected a juvenile passenger into the southbound travel lanes, the report said. The report said an unreported number of vehicles traveled over the ejected passenger, who died from her injuries.
According to the report, Rodriguez admitted to being the driver and sole adult in the vehicle. She told the trooper she had been driving overnight from Las Vegas to Ontario, California, and back, the report said. Rodriguez said she was driving 70 mph when she felt rumble strips on the shoulder before the crash occurred, according to the report.
The report said Rodriguez admitted to using marijuana vape pens the previous day and taking an unknown diet medication. She told the trooper she is diabetic and takes prescribed Gabapentin and Metformin, according to the report. The report said Rodriguez denied using methamphetamine or cocaine when asked but broke eye contact and looked away.
Paramedics checked Rodriguez’s blood sugar at the scene, which returned a reading of 147, according to the report. Rodriguez complained of hip pain and had multiple abrasions, the report said. She was transported to UMC Trauma Center, according to the report.
According to the report, Rodriguez consented to a voluntary blood draw at UMC Trauma. A separate buccal swab warrant was also conducted at the hospital.
According to the report, Rodriguez faces the following charges:
- DUI resulting in death
- Reckless driving resulting in death or substantial bodily harm
- Child abuse or neglect, first offense
- Failure to maintain lane/improper lane change
- Basic speed violation, 30-40 mph over posted limit
The arresting trooper also contacted a Child Protective Services caseworker to report the incident. CPS later followed up at UMC Trauma, the report said.
