LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Las Vegas police say the number of traffic fatalities is down compared with this time last year, but officers are warning that the holiday season can bring more dangerous driving.
During Teen Driver Safety Week, the department is pointing families to a program designed to help new drivers build better habits before they become deadly ones.
Fatality numbers
Capt. Jarvis Dudley with Las Vegas Metro Police’s Traffic Bureau says there have been 97 traffic fatalities so far, 32 fewer than last year’s 129.
He says speeding remains one of the biggest problems, along with distracted driving, and teens are not the only ones who need the reminder.

Driver training program
Dudley spoke about a program that gives young drivers hands-on training.
“There’s a great program called Driver’s Edge that you can sign up for, where they bring kids out to the track, they teach them how to drive appropriately, drive in wet conditions, and observe appropriate traffic measures,” Dudley said. “The one thing I go back to saying again, speed is what kills. I know kids like to drive fast; they’re distracted with their cell phones. Put your cell phones down, get to where you got to get to safely.”
He also urges parents to talk with their teens about safe driving habits because those habits formed early can carry into adulthood.
