LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Video captured a person with a baby stroller trying to cross a Henderson street, while three cars drove through the crosswalk without stopping.

The crosswalk is located on Water Street, near where drivers turn from Lake Mead Parkway. People who use the crosswalk and nearby businesses say the situation is dangerous.

Viewer video shows a person with a baby stroller about to cross the street. Pedestrian lights were flashing while three cars drove through the crosswalk without stopping. Two other cars stopped, allowing the person to cross safely.

Business describes frustration

Kori Stewart, a bartender and general manager at Gold Mine Tavern, said the crosswalk works well when drivers pay attention.

“We kind of have our own little joke here that, when you’re walking across the street, it’s like a game of Frogger and the gauntlet out here. It’s the Wild West, because you never know if the cars are going to stop or not,” Stewart said.

“It’s like you just risk your life to a certain degree,” said Greg Stewart, who lives in Boulder City.

Pedestrian safety advocate responds

Erin Breen, with PedSafe Vegas, said there is nothing wrong with the crosswalk or its equipment.

“Drivers here, they don’t pay attention. They don’t focus on the business of driving,” Breen said.

Breen said the cars that did not stop for the person with the baby stroller were breaking the law. She said drivers must stop for pedestrians preparing to cross, even when the pedestrian lights are not flashing.

FOX5 reached out to Henderson Police for a response about the crosswalk.

“Henderson Police remind drivers to be aware of crosswalks and pay attention to flashing lights. When crossing lights are illuminated, drivers must stop and yield for pedestrians waiting. Even if the lights aren’t flashing, drivers can still be cited for failing to yield to pedestrians. Pedestrians are also encouraged to make eye contact with drivers to ensure they are seen before stepping into the road,” said the Office of Public Information, City of Henderson Police Department.

Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month continues nationally and in Southern Nevada, with local awareness events scheduled for next week.
