LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Bicyclists in the Las Vegas Valley say cars parked in bike lanes are putting them in danger, including near a school in the southwest valley off Moule Avenue.

Alan Snell, a bicyclist in the valley, said he has come across cars parked illegally inside marked bike lanes.

“They’re not supposed to be in the bike lanes,” Snell said.

Snell said the parked vehicles extend beyond the bike lane.

“They’re not just blocking the lane for me as a bicyclist,” Snell said. “They’re actually sticking out about three, four feet into the traffic lane in a very confined area.”

Video shot by FOX5 showed cars parked nearly the entire length of the street inside the bike lane. Signs mark the bike lane and indicate no parking is allowed.

Parent describes using the bike lane

Carrie Davies, a parent, said she parks in the bike lane to wait for her child after school.

“I was honestly following suit with everybody else, but it is to get my kiddo from school,” Davies said. “There’s not much parking around here, and he comes out right from the gates right there.”

Davies said the spot was open when she arrived to leave early.

“So it was an open spot that I took to try to get out of here early,” Davies said.

Snell said he has biked across much of the country and said he has encountered the most unsafe driving habits in Las Vegas.

Prior crash involved a bike lane

One year ago, Snell says four students were killed walking and biking to and from school. One of the four students, a 12-year-old girl who was on a bicycle, had to veer around a parked car in a bike lane while biking home. She was struck and killed by a school bus operator.

Bicyclists say the parked cars in bike lanes are a safety issue for both bicyclists and children.

Snell said he wants more action and ticketing for drivers violating parking regulations.

FOX5 reached out to the Clark County School District about the issue. The district said it has not received any complaints at this school in the past month. The district said it has a traffic unit patrolling CCSD schools during the school year, which it said is committed to safety and visibility around school zones.

FOX5 also asked CCSD whether this is a problem the district is dealing with and what the consequences are for illegally parking in bike lanes. The district did not answer those questions.
