RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – More than 730,000 Nevadans have cast ballots, making up roughly two-thirds of the state’s total expected turnout, according to state election officials.

The count includes early in-person voting and mail-in ballots. Overall turnout is tracking lower than state leaders had hoped.

State data shows more than 443,000 mail ballots have been returned statewide.

Nevada State Secretary Cisco Aguilar estimates overall turnout will land between 1 million and 1.1 million voters. That represents roughly 50% to 55% of Nevada’s registered voters.

Another 300,000 to 400,000 ballots are expected Tuesday. State officials said this midterm is running behind presidential-year peaks.

Aguilar said turnout is lower than anticipated.

“Again, it’s lower than anticipated or wanted. We want to see in that high 70s, low 80s turnout because then you truly get a sense of what Nevadans expect of their future government leaders. Again, Nevada, the reason we’re probably seeing a lower turnout this midterm is the fact that Nevada doesn’t have a federal statewide race.”

With more than 443,000 mail ballots already submitted, counting capacity is in focus.

Aguilar said close margins are expected in key races, including the governor’s race and competitive mayoral races in Reno and Sparks. He said early numbers will be closely scrutinized as county clerks work to process the remaining batches.
