LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The visitor responsible for pulling down Death Valley’s historic salt tram tower has come forward, park officials say.
After the story initially emerged earlier this week, the visitor is now taking full responsibility for pulling down the 113-year-old tower. Officials say the individual called the tip line provided and stated that this was “done during a time of desperation while being deeply stuck in the mud.”
The individual added that it was never their intention to harm the tower. Park officials say they will not disclose any further information about the individual.
“We are grateful to the dozens of people who reached out to the park with information and for all the statements of support that we received from people who care about this place and its cultural resources,” said acting Superintendent Elizabeth Ibañez. “Although we would certainly prefer that this damage hadn’t happened, we are glad that the person who did this ultimately took responsibility for their actions and came forward.”
Crews are working to assess the tower’s damage and make plans to restore to tower. Park officials remind the public that patience is key during the repair process, as “repairs done by well-intentioned people who don’t have the proper tools and training can do additional damage.”
In the meantime, officials are reminding those traveling through the park to carry a satellite-based communication device in areas where cell coverage may be spotty. Additionally, park-goers are reminded to stay on paved roads as temperatures continue to climb.
