LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – School is officially out for CCSD students as they head into summer break.

However, as exciting as it can be to not have to go to school for the next two months, it can be challenging for some families.

School is where some kids are able to get majority of their meals, but Whitney Elementary School staff and students made sure to ring in summer in a unique way.

On Monday, the elementary school did their own cereal box domino challenge that has been going viral. It is a challenge. Paul Beauparlant, who works closely with the students, organized the event with the help of Findlay Automotive.

“Jessie over at Findlay Landover send me a video that went viral and said, ‘Hey, is this is Something we can do at Whitney?’” he said.

Beauparlant and staff at Findlay got to work. Together, they were able to donate nearly 2,000 cereal boxes to make the challenge happen.

All 1,900 boxes were knocked down in two minutes.

When all boxes were knocked down, each student was able to grab four boxes to take home for the summer.

“I love Chex Mix and I was prepared to get frosted flakes for my mom and then me and my siblings,” 5th grader Carmin said.

As FOX5 has reported before, this school has it’s own food pantry for students and their families.

“Right now, everybody needs a little help. If we can give them a little help then why not,” Beauparlant said.

With the pantry closed for the summer, Principal Melissa Roehm knew this was not just a fun challenge but a necessary one.

“Our parents are always asking if you have anything for us,” Roehm said. “We all know our grocery bills have went up this year, and it’s hit our community hard. “

Hard does not have to mean these families will be alone. Roehm said even though this was their first year doing this challenge, they may make it an annual tradition for the last day of school.

Findlay has been a significant donor of the school as they drop off food items monthly for the pantry.
