LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – With so many spam and scam calls, people who received a call on Friday from Henderson police may have thought it wasn’t legitimate.

A caller indicated police were looking for a robbery suspect, gave a description and told the public to call 911 if they spotted the suspect. That call was legitimate and came in around 3:30 last Friday afternoon.

FOX5 also received the call and became curious about it. Henderson Police responded to FOX5 and said alerts to the public are part of the city’s “Stay Alert, Henderson” emergency notification system. It is a 911 alert system to inform people of local emergencies.

Police say once someone signs up for the notifications, if they fall within the specified area for a reverse 911 call, they will receive the notification via email, text or phone call depending on what they choose when they sign up. People can use a cell phone, laptop or tablet. The digital program is free to sign up and Henderson says people will get targeted alerts such as weather events, hazmat incidents and other local emergencies based on their home, work or school location.

The city says its emergency alert program is overseen by the City of Henderson Emergency Managment Department and Police Department Communications Dispatch. The portal software was developed by Everbridge.
