LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — AAA Nevada held a free car seat inspection event Thursday at its West Lake Mead branch, giving families the opportunity to have their child safety seats checked and corrected by nationally certified technicians.

Why car seat installation matters

AAA says misused or improperly installed car seats are a leading cause of serious injuries for children involved in crashes. An analysis of federal data found that about one-third of car seats were installed incorrectly between 2019 and 2023.

John Trainor, a spokesperson for AAA Nevada, said installation errors are more common than many parents realize.

“You either don’t tighten it hard enough, maybe you move your kids to the wrong car seat, you might face it forward when you shouldn’t,” Trainor said. “It’s very, very common. More common to do it the wrong way than it is to do it the right way.”

Free inspections still available by appointment

AAA says even small mistakes can make a significant difference in a crash. The organization is urging parents to get their seats inspected.

Although Thursday’s event has concluded, appointments for free car seat inspections are still available through AAA Nevada. Membership is not required.
