LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Many families in the Hispanic community face challenges when it comes to accessing pet care.

A local nonprofit Amor Peludo is helping by offering bilingual support, emergency resources, and low-cost services.

In underserved communities across Las Vegas, language and income can often be barriers to pet care. That’s where Amor Peludo comes in – a grassroots organization helping Latino families care for their furry companions.

“Basically, amor peludo is the only rescue nonprofit organization that is 100% in Spanish here in the community,” said founder Ruby Lopez in Spanish.

Lopez says the idea came from seeing a gap in Spanish-language resources for people who were looking to help the stray animals in the community.

“The majority of our volunteers are bilingual so that allows people to feel comfortable speaking with us and asking for information,” Lopez explained.

Lopez says often, she’s seen many immigrant families reluctant to ask for help because of their immigration status.

“They face uncertainty when it comes to not having all the necessary documents, so they feel more comfortable speaking with someone who is in the same boat as them.”

Amor Peludo connects families with low-cost veterinary care, emergency pet food, and sterilization services and bilingual support – they work with fosters who can take in stray dogs or cats, offering some relief to major animal shelters across the Valley.

Lopez says it’s all about making sure no one is left out of helping these pets because they don’t speak the language or have the right paperwork.

The nonprofit is run entirely by volunteers and relies on people willing to foster pets when in need. For information on how to get involved with the organization visit the Amor Peludo website.
