LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Animal activists met on the steps of the regional justice center Monday morning seeking harsher punishments for animal cruelty cases.

The group stood on the steps on the same day carolyn luke and timothy miller were scheduled to be sentenced.

The couple are charged in the deaths of 16 dogs and 30 guinea pigs. Advocates are asking to remove plea deals from animal abuse cases due to the DA removing 16 felony counts as part of the couples plea deal. Las Vegas Councilwoman Victoria Seaman joined protestors on the steps.

“We have a real problem in this community with animal abuse and cruelty and unless we’re gonna have the punishment fit the crime, we’re going to continue to see animal abuse and this is the problem because its not the laws, its the pleading,” said Las Vegas Councilwoman Victoria Seaman.

In the case of Timothy Miller and Carolyn Luke the judge issued a continuance for the couple. They are due back in court on April 7.

Las Vegas City Council also rejected a proposal to make an animal advisory board.

Councilwoman Seaman said in a statement.
